India's New National Education Policy for English Language Teaching

The article offers an overview of the new India’s national education policy adopted in 2020 in the field of school education. Specific attention is paid to language education, in particular the theory and practice of teaching English. Teaching English in India is of strategic importance for the future of every Indian. It is the key to higher education. The new policy is based on the ideology of making India a “global knowledge superpower”. It aims to make school and higher education more holistic, interdisciplinary and flexible, in line with the 2020 Sustainable
Development Agenda. To realize the above vision of school education, a new comprehensive National School Education Program was prepared, which is a kind of teaching standard and guidance for practicing teachers and developers of programs and educational materials. This docu-
ment details language education based on the three-language formula. A separate section is devoted to the English language, which presents standards at each level, principles of course development, illustrative content and recommendations for assessment.
